It is difficult to watch the footage from Gyirong Port in Tibet without feeling your heart sink.
On the morning of August 26, 2026, life was moving normally along the mountainous China–Nepal border. People were travelling. Workers were going about their day. Families were inside their homes. Tourists and pilgrims were passing through the region.
Then, within moments, everything changed.
High in the Himalayas, part of a glacier collapsed, sending an enormous mass of ice, rock and debris crashing into the valley below. What followed was a terrifying chain reaction , a violent surge of mud, rocks and water tore through the river system and descended upon communities with almost unimaginable force.
At Gyirong Port, videos captured people desperately running as the enormous wall of debris approached. Buildings, vehicles and infrastructure were overwhelmed. Across the border in Nepal, villages and roads were swallowed and bridges destroyed.

The most heartbreaking thing is how little time people had.
One moment, there was a normal morning.
The next, people were running for their lives.
As rescue operations continue, the human cost is becoming increasingly painful. Current reports put the death toll across the disaster zone at more than 160, while well over 1,000 people remain missing across Nepal and Tibet. In Gyirong County alone, Chinese authorities reported 558 people missing, including foreign nationals, with rescuers still desperately searching for survivors.
Behind every number is a person.
Someone’s mother. Someone’s father. Someone’s child. Someone who left home that morning expecting to return.
The images from Gyirong are a sobering reminder of how suddenly life can change. Entire plans, journeys and ordinary conversations interrupted in seconds by a force no human being standing there could control.
Today, while rescuers dig through mud and debris and families wait desperately for news, our hearts are with the people of Tibet and Nepal.
May those still missing be found alive.
May strength come to those who have lost loved ones. And may help reach every community still cut off by this devastating tragedy.
Who are the people behind these disasters? Nobody is ready for this conversation.
August 26, 2026 a morning thousands of families will never forget.
